Episode 665

Ty Pinkins on Obama, Clinton, Schumer — and the Democrats who sacrifice Black voters every cycle

One day before the election, independent veteran Ty Pinkins joins Paul from Vicksburg to detail how the national Democratic Party has used Black voters in Mississippi as sacrificial lambs for forty years — and how the media is erasing his name from election maps while partisan hacks smear him as a spoiler. This is what the rigged two-party system looks like when a 21-year Army vet with two law degrees refuses to kiss the ring. It’s also what the independent movement looks like when it finally scares the machine.

Why the DNC asked Democrats to clear the field in South Dako. Why the DNC asked Democrats to clear the field in South Dakota, Idaho, and Nebraska for independent veterans — but refused to do it in Mississippi

On the eve of election day, Paul Rieckhoff sits down with Ty Pinkins — Army veteran of 21 years, three combat tours, Bronze Star recipient, Georgetown-trained attorney, and the independent candidate for U.S. Senate in Mississippi — for a no-BS conversation about what the rigged two-party system actually does to Black voters in the South. Pinkins lays out, with receipts going back to 1982, how the national Democratic Party keeps running doomed candidates in Mississippi not to win, but to harvest Black turnout for the next presidential cycle. He names names: Obama, Clinton, Schumer, Warnock, Booker, Benny Thompson. And he reveals that the only people who have offered him money to drop out are Democrats.

The conversation widens into the bigger story of 2026: six independent veterans running for Senate in six states, a media establishment that literally refuses to put independent candidates on its election maps, and a generation of young Americans leaving both parties at a rate of 10,000 a week. Paul and Ty get into the smears, the phone calls, the Christian conservative women crossing over, the Black elders in Vicksburg saying “this is what we’ve been waiting on,” and why loyalty in politics has to run both ways. This is a dispatch from the front lines of the independent revolt — and a preview of the reckoning coming to both parties whether they’re ready or not.

  • The receipts: Musgrove 2000, Childers, Barria, Espy 2018, 2020, Presley 2023 — the same “it’s this close” playbook every cycle
  • “The only group that’s offered me money to drop out is Democrats” — the summer-long pressure campaign nobody’s reporting on
  • Why the DNC asked Democrats to clear the field in South Dakota, Idaho, and Nebraska for independent veterans — but refused to do it in Mississippi
  • CNN’s election map literally does not list Ty Pinkins as a candidate in Mississippi — Paul pulls it up live on the show
  • The ballot-access double standard: $1,000 and you’re on as a Democrat; an independent has to collect signatures across all 82 counties
  • Benny Thompson telling Black delegates at the DNC in Chicago not to support the only Democrat on the ballot in Ty’s 2024 Senate race
  • The crossover coalition on the ground: Christian conservative women, Republican men, and Black elders in their 70s and 80s all telling Ty they’re voting for him
  • The bigger play: six independent veterans running in six states to deny either party a Senate majority and force every bill through the independent middle
  • Why 10,000 Americans a week are leaving both parties — and why the reckoning is delayed, not canceled
