351. Rob Serra, FDNY (Ret.). The Annual 9/11 Show. 2025: Has American Forgotten? The Stories, The Heroes, The Controversies, The Politicization, The Never Ending Fight For Healthcare, And The Mission To Teach The Next Generation.

If you’ve listened to this show over the years, chances are that you’ve heard our guest. If you haven’t, get ready for a solid dose of the straight up good stuff. Rob Serra (@SerraRob) is back for the annual 9/11 episode and this one hits hard. Host and founder Paul Rieckhoff (@PaulRieckhoff) was there at Ground Zero on 9/11. So was Rob. It was famously his first day on the job. Yes, you read that right, his first day as a New York City firefighter was Tuesday, September 11th, 2001.

They didn’t meet then, but they were both there and it’s played a massive role in their lives and indeed in the lives of every American. If you weren’t alive then, it’s hard to explain how much the world has changed as a result (more on that in the podcast). But they were there. In the middle of all of the destruction. And listening to them discuss what happened then and what has happened since can teach us all about what it means to be an American— the good and the bad. And as the country experiences the staggering effects of more political violence, and seems more divided than ever, this is a conversation everyone needs to listen to and absorb.

It’s a gut-check on a nation grappling with its past and its future. It’s a raw, authentic conversation about service, sacrifice, and the enduring fight for those who ran toward the fire and the driving call behind why we must always stay vigilant.

Every episode of Independent Americans with Paul Rieckhoff (@PaulRieckhoff) breaks down the most important news stories–and offers light to contrast the heat of other politics and news shows. It’s independent content for independent Americans. In these trying times especially, Independent Americans is your trusted place for independent news, politics, inspiration and hope. The podcast that helps you stay ahead of the curve–and stay vigilant.

350. Dean Kamen (Replay). Inventing iBOTs, Segways and Scooters. The Wheelchair of the Future. Inside DARPA. Using Robots To Build Kids. Revenge of the Nerds.

We’ve got one last look back before we plunge into the future. This week we’re taking it way, way back to Episode 26 with the amazing inventor Dean Kamen. From Episode 26 – September 26, 2019: Dean Kamen is one of the greatest inventors of our time. He invented the Segway, the first drug infusion pump, and the Slingshot–a water purification device that requires no filters, can turn almost any kind of water into drinking water and can operate using cow dung as fuel. He also invented the LUKE (Life Under Kinetic Evolution) prosthetic arm for the Department of Defense’s DARPA (Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency). And now, Dean has invented invented a revolutionary all-terrain electric wheelchair known as the iBOT. He rode to our interview with your host Paul Rieckhoff (@PaulRieckhoff) on the newest version that he unveiled to the world this week in New York–and shares why it can change history not just for the disabled and wounded veterans–but for everyone. Like all our guests, Dean Kamen is an iconic, important and inspiring American. One who’s shaped what America has been in the past, is in the present, and more than any other guest we’ve had so far, he’s shaping the future. One of Dean’s proudest accomplishments is founding FIRST® (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology), an organization dedicated to motivating the next generation to understand, use and enjoy science and technology. This year FIRST® will serve more than 1 million young people, ages 6 to 18, in more than 86 countries. High-school-aged participants were eligible for more than $50 million in scholarships from over 200 leading colleges, universities, and corporations. Dean Kamen was Elon before Elon. But not all messed up. He’s a much better person, he’s a much better creator, he’s a much better visionary and most importantly he’s a helper. –WATCH video of Paul and Dean’s conversation. -Learn more about Independent Veterans of America and all of the IVA candidates.  –Join the movement. And before we get back to all new episodes we’ve got another great look back at a favorite with the great actor Jeffrey Wright. He digs into his role on WestWorld, his time in Hollywood and the roles he loves to take on, and he shares the story of Nearest Green and what has become not only an inspiration but is also a very successful enterprise.

From Episode 55 – April 16, 2020:

348. Aaron Mankin (Replay). Losing Your Face in Combat. Debating Sara Huckabee Sanders in High School. How to Survive 70 Surgeries. Aaron’s Playboy Mansion Story. Scars Are Not Forever. Operation Mend. No Excuse Not to Serve.

Our August break continues and we’re throwing it way back to Episode 34 with Aaron Mankin. A true American hero, Aaron Menken joined Paul Rieckhoff at the Classic Car Club in New York for an incredibly powerful conversation. Having survived a catastrophic IED explosion in Iraq that left him with severe burns and countless injuries shares the story of his journey to recovery with Paul in this riveting conversation. This is about more than just survival—it’s about choosing hope over despair and we’re sure it will leave you feeling inspired.

Aaron’s injuries have meant he’s had to endure over 70 surgeries to reconstruct his face and body, but he’s lifting up others by turning his recovery into a mission to inspire others. He talks about the extraordinary support of Operation Mend at UCLA, a program that not only rebuilt his face but also helped restore his soul. With his trademark humor, he recalls a memorable encounter at the Playboy Mansion, where he found himself in a room with more plastic surgery than any place on Earth.

It’s a masterclass in turning trauma into purpose. The importance of gratitude and service, and a unique look at how you define a leader and a patriot. His powerful message is a must-listen interview with a man who has every reason to be angry but chooses to be happy and inspire others instead. And people like that are why we built this show.

347. David Bellavia (Replay). The Sole Living Medal of Honor Recipient of the Iraq War. Combat is Not Like The Movies. Who’s A Bigger Threat – Libertarians or Liberals? Time Does Not Heal All Wounds. Live the Life You’re Supposed to Live.

Our throwback August continues as we go way back to Episode 33 with Paul’s fascinating conversation with the sole living Medal of Honor Recipient from the Iraq War. It’s a hell of a distinction–and a hell of a conversation. Take some time and listen to this timeless talk about war, humanity and the drive to push forward, even after horrific loss. From inside the very cool Classic Car Club in Manhattan. In a raw and powerful conversation, Paul sits down with David Bellavia, the first living Medal of Honor recipient for the Iraq War. David is a man Paul has known for years and a true American hero. But this isn’t a conversation about glory and medals; it’s a raw, honest discussion about the weight of sacrifice, the nature of heroism, and the deep, often painful, bonds forged in combat. Bellavia, an unapologetic conservative and proud New Yorker, doesn’t shy away from the hard truths. He reflects on his time in Iraq, the emotional burden of the Medal of Honor, and the painful division among veterans that “ripped the soul” out of him.  This is a candid discussion about the complexities of a war many Americans want to forget, the burden of being a “courier” for the fallen, and the love and loyalty that truly fuel a soldier’s fight. Bellavia’s perspective is a crucial reminder that at the end of the day, it’s not about politics—it’s about the men and women to your left and right. And it’s good perspective and inspiration to absorb as we get into the final weeks of summer. And be sure to watch on YouTube and see Paul and David check out some classic cars!  –WATCH video of Paul and David’s conversation. -Learn more about Independent Veterans of America and all of the IVA candidates.  –Join the movement. 346. Sam Bee (Replay). The Kurds are Being Slaughtered. Democrats Debate Again. The Middle East Jenga Game. Sam Bee at The DMV. The Daily Show Reunion Tour. Fighting Back with Comedy. Djibouti and Naugahyde.

Our August break is continuing with a replay of one of our favorite chats we’ve ever recorded. This one is really fun.  Over the next few weeks we’ll be re-sharing conversations with some of our favorite guests as they share their stories of independence, integrity, information, inspiration and definitely impact. We’re kicking the series off with a conversation with comedy legend Sam Bee. And if you’re a Lindsey Graham fan, this one is not for you. Recorded live from the Manhattan Classic Car Club back in 2019, this episode is a candid, no-holds-barred conversation with one of America’s most important voices in comedy and journalism. As you’d expect, Sam doesn’t hold back, delivering a blistering critique of the administration, the politicians who enable it, and the moral compromises being made in Washington to placate Trump. Sound familiar? This episode is a look back at 2019 when we were just getting started. But once you give it a listen, you might be surprised by just how relevant it still is. –WATCH video of Paul and Sam’s conversation. 345. Stephen Colbert. Replay with the American Icon. Taking on Trump, The Supreme Court Battle, Breonna Taylor, Leadership After Loss, Stephen’s Dog Eating Ai Weiwei’s Art, Joking in the Face of Fear, Laughing at the Devil.

Producers note: Folks, if you’ve been following this show for a while now, you know we go hard. All of the time. From last week’s event in Washington DC to upcoming events later this year, to the non-stop news appearances (not to mention I make Paul walk around New York filming himself talking into a camera), to the multiple organizations he’s helping run (Independent Veterans of America, American Veterans for Ukraine, Operation Liberty), we keep the hammer down.  But like Paul’s mentor Les Gelb taught him, if you don’t take a break you get stupid, and we don’t want to get stupid. So today, we’re taking a break. And throwing it back to one of our most popular guests and popular episodes with an American Icon that is in the headlines, and in Trump’s crosshairs. So this week we’re jumping in the Righteous Media time machine and traveling way way back to Episode 78 from September 24, 2020 with Stephen Colbert. It’s a great conversation and one we think you’ll enjoy revisiting. From Episode 78: “Fear is the mind killer. If you’re laughing you’re not afraid.” Wise words in this groundbreaking new episode from a truly iconic guest: Stephen Colbert (@StephenAtHome). [06:14] Stephen joins us from his home–uninterrupted and unedited in this fun, candid and inspiring episode. As we enter the most trying and important fall of our lifetime, Angry Americans is bringing in the big guns to get you through this trying time. And there are few bigger than Stephen Colbert.   President Mayhem is sheer chaos. He’s doing anything and everything he can to disrupt our country, our unity and our day. And this conversation is the antidote. Stephen and host Paul Rieckhoff (@PaulRieckhoff) break down the current state of the country and what the future might hold. Stephen beams in from his home office and shares wisdom, jokes and some amazing stories. He talks about his trip to Iraq to visit the troops and why he shaved his head while he was there. His first car story is one of the best we’ve ever had. His answer to what makes him happy is heartwarming. But also painful. And expensive. This is Stephen Colbert like you’ve never heard him before. You’ll just have to listen.  Because Independent Americans is built on the Righteous Media 5 Is: independence, integrity, information, inspiration and impact. And this episode has it in spades. Independent Americans is your trusted place for independent news, politics, inspiration and hope. It’s the truth beyond the headlines–and light to contrast the heat of other politics and news shows. 344. Live From DC. The Independent Center’s Independent Voice Conference. Hear From Independent Candidates for Office From Around the Country Featuring: Idaho’s Todd Achilles, California’s Ethan Penner and Tennessee’s Khalil Ekulona.

What’s it like behind the scenes of the independent movement? What does the future look like and who will be the candidates that emerge as leaders of the movement? They’re important questions we’ve explored now for years and this week we’ve got a rare opportunity to share with you, the true independent Americans. This week, our host Paul Rieckhoff (@PaulRieckhoff) was joined by past guest and independent veteran candidate for Senate from Idaho Todd Achilles, California candidate for Governor Ethan Penner, and Tennessee’s Khalil Ekulona for a discussion about what the future of the movement looks like and how it will take shape. It was part of a fascinating day of panel discussions featuring leaders from Forward Party, Veterans for All Voters and many other leading organizations in the independent space as well as a session with Joe Manchin and his daughter, former Colorado Congressman Ken Buck and many other notable speakers. The event was organized by our good friends at the Independent Center and was hopefully the first of many conversations like this. Not everyone that was there agreed about how to approach the challenges of the future, but we all agree on one thing. Independents are the future. And this event was in part about independents planting a flag in Washington DC and claiming what is rightfully all of ours. The movement is young and growing, and these are the kind of events that can prove historic. And these are the kind of leaders that can make history.  Because Independent Americans is built on the Righteous Media 5 Is: independence, integrity, information, inspiration and impact. Independent Voter News: GUEST OPINION: Mamdani, Lander, The Working Families Party, and Other Partisan Extremists Just Took a Bite Out of NYC’s Democracy

Independent Americans, we’ve got a great piece from your host, Paul Rieckhoff tearing into the New York elections board’s terrible decision to keep Open Primaries off the ballot in the 2025 elections. Here’s Paul’s column: The partisans, unions, and party bosses have won again. Independents, veterans, working people, young people and democracy have lost again. This is what the corrupt, partisan (increasingly radical), un-democratic Democratic Party and special interests winning looks like. This is another fight denying me and all independent New Yorkers an equal say in our democracy. And another manipulation of public funds and resources to fuel private, partisan, increasingly extreme primaries. Zohran Mamdani, Brad Lander, the Working Families Party, the Republican Party and union bosses will continue to use NYC public resources to fuel their partisan, exclusionary, and increasingly politically extreme agenda. Once Mamdani won the Dem primary, open primaries on the ballot his fall in NYC was going down. Hyper-partisan liberals who just won last month now want to maintain the rigged primary system that they benefit from—and increase their power. And they want to continue to deny independent New Yorkers like me the right to an equal vote in the city that I love and served as a First Responder on 9/11 and in uniform in the Army. Don’t let them spin it. It wasn’t billionaires pushing for open primaries. That’s why they won’t name them. It was veterans, 9/11 First Responders, and democracy activists from nonpartisan, nonprofit groups like The League of Women Voters, Open Primaries, Veterans for All Voters, Independent Veterans of America. and others. These partisan, anti-democracy hacks pushed behind closed doors to kill it. But also, out in the open (if you looked hard enough). If you want to see who stood with open primaries, democracy and empowering all voters–and who stood against us–see them in their own words. They fought to keep it off the ballot because they didn’t want a public debate against New Yorkers like me. And they didn’t want all New Yorkers to have a chance to vote on the issue of Election Day. Because they know they would lose — and democracy would win. So, they executed a backroom play and shady pressure campaign to ensure a piece of our democracy died in the darkness. They won this time. But people nationwide are now seeing the shady crap they’re doing. Our movement is growing, and ultimately, we will prevail. Because they stand with partisanship, corruption, and the status quo. And we stand for equality and democracy. They won this battle. But we are gaining ground nationwide every day. And we will win the war. About The Author Paul Rieckhoff is an independent activist, US Army infantry combat veteran, 9/11 First Responder, the host of Independent Americans, President and founder of Independent Veterans of America (IVA) and the author of “Chasing Ghosts: Failures and Facades in Iraq, A Soldier’s Perspective.” Original post here: https://ivn.us/posts/guest-opinion-mamdani-lander-working-families-party-and-other-partisan-extremists-just-took

343. Dan Osborn. The Independent Vet Is Running Again In Nebraska. The Mechanic vs The Billionaire. Agreeing With Tucker Carlson. Ukraine’s Support Grows. Who’s Your Favorite Ninja Turtle? Coach Youman Wilder – A True Helper. Look Out for the Youngsters.

The summer of 2025 has been a time of chaos. A time of confusion. And a time of distress for many Americans. But for independent Americans it’s been a little bit different. In between all of the moments of turmoil have been glimmers of hope, a chance at a better future. And that better future is being driven by independents. From Jim Walden’s upstart mayoral campaign in New York City to the Badlands of South Dakota and Brian Bengs’ renegade Senate run, to last episode’s guest from the great state of Idaho, Todd Achilles — there’s been a lot coming from independents to get excited about. And now there’s more! Independent Navy vet Dan Osborn (@OsbornForSenate) is back in the fight. And this time, he’s running against Nebraska’s other MAGA Republican Senator billionaire: Pete Ricketts. It’s the ultimate David vs Goliath showdown. And this time, Dan’s got some experience, a network, name recognition and is hitting the ground running. Dan served in the Navy and later joined the Army National Guard. He’s a steamfitter, industrial mechanic, and a badass labor union leader. He led a successful strike at Kellogg’s Omaha plant in 2021. And ran for Senate in 2024–narrowly losing to incumbent Deb Fischer. But at the same time, Dan laid down the foundation for this run while inspiring a new generation of independent leaders across the country. His race was a direct challenge to the party system and it showed everyone a new way to run—and offered a new vision for what a political race can look like. If you’ve listened to the show for a while now, you’ll know Dan and what he’s meant to the movement. If you’re new here, get ready to get fired up. In the immortal words of Vin Diesel, “We live for this….” Stuff. And there’s more as your host Paul Rieckhoff (@PaulRieckhoff) rips into Ukraine, Waltz, SignalGate, Hegseth and all of the latest national security news that you need to stay on top of. And a megadose of inspiration with a quick hit on Youman Wilder—a New York City little league coach that stood up to ICE and has inspired millions.
