  It’s been another hard week in America. Another week with another catastrophic and horrifying school shooting. And as spring finally begins in America, this is an especially critical time to stay vigilant.  The Nashville PD had leaders who stepped up. While others in Washington cowered and failed. And coming up, we’re gonna break it down with a legendary special operations Recon Marine and tactical trainer–who’s been in situations much like that many times. And trained many more. We’re gonna dig into what those leaders did right to save lives…and get some tips on what you can do if you ever find yourself in a similar situation. And learn about ways you can help. Ways you can lead. Because in 2023 in America. It can happen in any town. In any city. In any school. On any day.  And as we face the very real threat of violence not only overseas—but inside every community in America-we are all looking for leaders. Looking for the helpers. And like our guest in this episode.  He’s a man Paul Rieckhoff has known for almost twenty years. He’s a real life superhero. A real life Iron Man.  He’s the amazing RUDY REYES (@realRudyReyes).  Rudy finished his service as a highly decorated Special Forces operator with experience of leading over 50 patrols behind enemy lines. He served one tour in Afghanistan during Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF) and two tours in Iraq during Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF) as a Recon Marine Team Leader and Scout Sniper.  Rudy’s areas of military expertise are in close quarter battle, urban warfare, amphibious raids and reconnaissance, helicopter insertions/extractions, paratrooper and combat diver missions, clandestine sniper missions as well as plain clothes/undercover operations. He’s operated in a multitude of environments, from urban, mountain, and desert. He’s also the star of multiple reality TV shows, including the recent Fox hit: “Special Forces: World’s Toughest Test,” And he’s gonna help us understand what happened inside that school in Nashville. What’s happening inside America. What’s happened since Iraq 20 years ago.   War is bloody, expensive and hard. And sometimes, necessary.  The prolonged occupation of Afghanistan was probably not necessary. The initial invasion probably was. But we can debate all of that for decades. And we will. But what is not debatable is the incredibly high cost of leaving your allies, or even your own Marines and troops, to fight and die on their own.  If you leave your people hanging at the most key moment, it will be even more bloody, expensive and hard. And that will be true of the war in Ukraine. And that war to protect the freedom, sovereignty and very existence of Ukraine is not a war of choice. This is a war of necessity.  March Madness is every day in Ukraine. It’s an especially brutal and pivotal time for the war. And we’re strategically digging into what’s most important, what new US weapons are possibly en route, and what’s likely to happen next. To include breaking down what the hell China is doing. And has a degree from Harvard. Super Bowls are a time for leaders to step up. And for heroes to me made. 
But they’re not real heroes. They’re football players. And most of them are not real heroes. 
But a generation ago, there was a real hero playing in the Super Bowl. 
A true legend. And that legend was established the moment he stepped back on an NFL field. And was elevated after he made it to the Super Bowl. And after he won FOUR of them. 
Against all odds, he became the only purple heart recipient in history to win a Super Bowl. And the only one to win FOUR!
For more than two years, he drove himself. Little by little he overcame obstacles and fought his way back. He not only made the Pittsburgh Steelers, but also eventually became a starting running back on a team that won four Super Bowls and became the greatest football team of the 20th century.
The hard lessons Rocky Bleier (@RockyBleier) learned early in his life that helped him overcome adversity and reach his goals, have paid off after football. These lessons are seen between the lines in the popular book on his life, “Fighting Back” and on stages of speaking appearances around the country.
Rocky Bleier is a true hero. A true champion. Not just a Super Bowl champion. But a champion for veterans. A champion for America. And, now, a champion for independents everywhere. He’s leading an effort in his home state of Pennsylvania to end the ridiculous and un-American closed primaries. And continuing to inspire millions.

And she’s finally back on this show–to break it down.  It’s the one and only, Dr. Rachel Maddow (@maddow)! If you get to know Rachel, you know a few things. You know she is really that nice in person. You know she treats everyone around her with respect and love. You know she’s a damn good friend. You know she’s even smarter than most people realize. Doing any kind of work. Watching her put together a book or show is like watching a master mason build a perfect foundation for her own house. With thoughtfulness, with precision, with sweat, with focus, with attention to detail, with pride, and with heart. She researches, she measures, she cuts, she builds. She puts tremendous pride and heart into anything she puts her name on. And that’s just part of what makes her different–and makes her special. And it’s why, like so many true icons, she’s known often only by one name: Rachel. Or Maddow. But people refer to her like they know her—-or they know of her. She’s a defining voice of our time.  But a voice doesn’t do too many interviews she’s not hosting. And this one is a treat.
